Lisbon, Portugal’s sun-kissed capital, is a fantastic year-round destination thanks to its mild climate and abundance of sunshine. Whether you’re planning to explore the city’s historic neighbourhoods, lounge on its nearby beaches, or indulge in its renowned culinary scene, knowing what to expect from the weather can help you make the most of your trip.

Lisbon’s Climate Overview

Lisbon enjoys a Mediterranean climate, which means hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. With over 2,800 hours of sunshine a year, it’s one of Europe’s sunniest capitals, making it an ideal destination no matter the season. However, depending on your travel style, some months may suit your plans better than others.

Seasons in Lisbon

Spring (March – May): Pleasant and Blooming

Spring is one of the best times to visit Lisbon. As winter fades, temperatures rise, but it’s still comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Temperature: Ranges from 15°C in March to around 22°C in May.

Rainfall: March can still be a bit rainy, but by April, showers become less frequent.

What to Expect: This is the perfect time for exploring Lisbon’s charming streets, taking a tram ride through Alfama, or enjoying a riverside walk without the summer crowds. The city’s parks, like Eduardo VII Park, burst into bloom, adding extra charm to your trip.

What to Pack: Light layers, a waterproof jacket for occasional showers, and comfortable shoes for walking Lisbon’s famous hills.

Summer (June – August): Hot and Lively

Summer is peak season in Lisbon, attracting sun-seekers and festival lovers from all over. The city comes alive with music, outdoor dining, and long beach days.

Temperature: Expect highs of 28-30°C, with some heatwaves pushing it above 35°C. Evenings remain warm, averaging around 18-20°C.

Rainfall: Almost non-existent – expect dry, sunny days.

What to Expect: This is the best time for beach lovers, with the Atlantic Coast offering plenty of opportunities to cool off. If you’re visiting in June, don’t miss the Festas de Lisboa, a month-long celebration with parades, street parties, and delicious grilled sardines.

What to Pack: Light, breathable clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat. Also, bring a swimsuit if you fancy a beach day at Cascais or Costa da Caparica.

Insider Tip: If you’re not a fan of the heat, plan your sightseeing early in the morning or in the evening. Seek shade in Lisbon’s miradouros (viewpoints), or take a breezy ferry ride across the Tagus River.

Autumn (September – November): Warm and Comfortable

Autumn in Lisbon is another fantastic time to visit, with summer’s heat fading into pleasant warmth and fewer crowds.

Temperature: September still feels like summer, with highs of 26°C, but by November, daytime temperatures drop to 17-19°C.

Rainfall: September is mostly dry, but showers increase in October and November.

What to Expect: The sea remains warm enough for swimming in early autumn, and outdoor dining is still very much on the cards. This is a great time for exploring Sintra without the summer crowds or taking a scenic tram ride through the city’s historic districts.

What to Pack: Light clothing for the day, but bring a jacket for cooler evenings and possible showers.

Insider Tip: If you visit in October, take a day trip to the Douro Valley for the grape harvest season and enjoy Portugal’s famous wines.

Winter (December – February): Mild but Unpredictable

While winter in Lisbon isn’t as cold as in northern Europe, it can still be damp and chilly, especially in the evenings.

Temperature: Daytime highs of 14-17°C, with cooler nights around 8-10°C.

Rainfall: This is the wettest season, with December seeing the most rain. However, showers are usually short-lived.

What to Expect: Lisbon’s festive lights and Christmas markets make it a magical winter getaway. While some outdoor attractions might be less enjoyable due to the rain, indoor activities like visiting the Tile Museum or exploring LX Factory keep things interesting.

What to Pack: A waterproof jacket, warm layers, and an umbrella for rainy days.

Best Time to Visit Lisbon

For sightseeing & cultural experiences: March – May & September – October

For beach lovers & nightlife: June – August

For a quiet, budget-friendly trip: November – February

No matter when you visit, Lisbon’s charm, rich history, and lively atmosphere will make for an unforgettable trip.
