🚋 Metrolink Overview

Manchester’s tram network has eight lines covering 99 stops. Trams run approximately every 6–12 minutes from early morning until late at night, making it a convenient way to travel. The network connects key areas including Manchester Airport, the city centre, major train stations, and popular suburbs.

The Metrolink is a contactless payment system, allowing passengers to tap in and out with bank cards, mobile devices, or buy paper tickets. Passengers can also use the Bee Network app to plan journeys and purchase tickets in advance.

💳 Metrolink Ticket Options & Fares

Metrolink operates on a zonal fare system, meaning the price of your journey depends on how many zones you travel through.

Single and return tickets are available, but most people opt for a day pass or contactless cap, which limits how much you’ll be charged in a day.

  • 🎟️ Single journey: Prices vary by distance, starting at £2.80 (Zone 1-2).
  • 🛑 Anytime Day Travelcard: Unlimited travel all day from £5.40 (Zone 1).
  • 🗓️ Weekend Travelcard: Unlimited travel from 6 PM Friday to Sunday night for £7.80 (Zone 1-3).
  • 💳 Contactless cap: Tap in and out using a bank card or mobile payment, and you’ll never pay more than £5.40 per day in Zone 1-2, or £7.20 for all zones.
  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Travelcard: £8.80 for one adult and three children to travel together all day.

To use the contactless system, simply tap in at the start and tap out at the end of your journey at the yellow card readers.

📍 Metrolink Routes & Major Stops

All Metrolink lines pass through the city centre, making it easy to transfer between trams.

The main city centre stops include Piccadilly, Victoria, Exchange Square, St Peter’s Square, Deansgate-Castlefield, and Market Street.

Each tram line serves different parts of Manchester:

✈️ Airport Line (Purple) – Travels from Manchester Airport through Wythenshawe and Firswood before reaching the city centre.

⚽ Altrincham Line (Red) – A popular route for commuters and football fans, connecting Altrincham, Sale, Old Trafford, and the city centre.

🛍️ Bury Line (Yellow) – Runs from Bury through Prestwich, serving the north of Manchester.

🎭 Eccles Line (Blue) – Covers Salford Quays, MediaCityUK, and Eccles, making it ideal for visiting BBC Studios, The Lowry, and the Imperial War Museum.

🌳 East Didsbury Line (Green) – Links Didsbury, Chorlton, and Trafford Bar with the city centre.

🏟️ Rochdale Line (Pink) – Connects Rochdale, Oldham, Newton Heath, and Etihad Stadium for football fans.

🛒 Trafford Centre Line (Dark Blue) – Ideal for shopping trips, linking The Trafford Centre, EventCity, and Cornbrook.

🚲 Ashton Line (Light Blue) – Covers Ashton-under-Lyne, Droylsden, and the Etihad Campus.

✔️ Tips for Using Metrolink

✅ Trams run approximately every 6–12 minutes, but service is less frequent early in the morning and late at night.

✅ Avoid peak times (7:30–9:30 AM and 4:30–6:30 PM) for a more comfortable journey.

✅ Always tap in and out at the yellow card readers when using contactless payment. If you forget to tap out, you’ll be charged the highest fare.

✅ Late-night trams operate on Fridays and Saturdays to accommodate night-time events.

✅ Alcohol is not allowed on the trams.

✈️ Travelling to Manchester Airport on Metrolink

The Metrolink is one of the easiest ways to reach Manchester Airport without worrying about traffic or parking.

The Purple Line connects the airport to the city centre in approximately 35 minutes, stopping at St Peter’s Square, Deansgate-Castlefield, and Victoria.

The cost of a one-way trip from the airport is £4.60 if travelling through all zones.

If you’re arriving at Manchester Airport, follow the tram signs from Terminal 1 or 2, and purchase a ticket before boarding.

👍 Is Metrolink Worth Using?

Absolutely! The Manchester Metrolink is fast, reliable, and well-connected, making it the best way to explore the city without the hassle of traffic or expensive parking.

With frequent services, simple contactless payments, and a cap on daily fares, it’s a convenient and budget-friendly option for both visitors and locals. Whether you’re heading to a football match, catching a flight, or shopping at Trafford Centre, Metrolink has you covered.
